About us

Eikon is a charitable organisation which exists to support young people and families who find life difficult. Its aim is to support them in their struggles, encourage the development of strategies to overcome their struggles and promote the development of greater aspirations in all with whom it comes in contact. Eikon run a variety of projects, all of which contribute to these aims.

Eikon's origins date back to 1995, when the 'New Haw Youth Project' was set up by a small group of volunteers who were running a regular open youth club at Heathervale Baptist Church in New Haw. "We met many young people, and through our conversations with them, our eyes were opened to the difficult issues that many were living with day by day. There was no statutory youth provision in the area and there was little help available to them. We felt compelled to respond and put our time and qualifications to use."

Originally, the 'New Haw Youth Project' work centered around New Haw and in particular Fullbrook school where Chris Hickford; the founding member, worked as a Relational Youth worker at the school. As the work of the charity expanded and influence extended beyond just 'youth' and the area of 'New Haw', the charity was re-launched in 2005 and re-named Eikon.

Eikon now operates in four schools in Surrey and employees nine specialist staff members but still relies on numerous volunteers to assist with the ever-increasing workload.

What does 'Eikon' mean?
1. It is Greek for 'picture' and we aim to help all those we have contact with to not only picture a better future but to work towards it becoming a reality.
2. Icons are people we look up to for an example and respect. All eikon staff want to live life as an example, ensuring that what we do is consistent with what we say. We believe this will have the biggest impact on those we have contact with.
