2011 Trip!  Write-up by Maddy Robertson, Relational Youth Worker at Eikon.

“SGH 2011 met all our expectations and we had a great time – it helped that the weather was stunning!  Throughout the week the group bonded over adrenaline filled activities such as kayaking, surfing, climbing, coast-steering and archery, as well as spending the evenings taking parts in discussions about role models and global issues such as the famine in East Africa.  The purpose of our residential trip to St Georges House in Devon (known as SGH to the young people) is to not only provide young people with stimulating and challenging activities aimed at building their self-esteem, but also to create a safe, supportive, family-like environment for them to feel secure enough to open up and evaluate their lives and priorities. During the week, I think we achieved both of these in bucket loads and I felt truly privileged to see young people overcoming their fears and watching their confidence levels soar as the week went on.

Over the course of the week, there were many, many highlights, ranging from seeing a particular young person, refining their bad language to instead using the phrase ‘what the dickens’  to great comical affect, to watching groups of young people who don’t normally ‘hang out’ together, uniting for a game of Ninja’s (don’t ask!!!) on the beach.

This is the truly special thing about SGH, despite the range of needs of the young people varying dramatically, by the end of the week, there is a real sense of community and as one young person simply put it “SGH is amazing – I love it!”
